Multiply a container’s capacity in fl oz by 0.86 for the fill weight in ounces (GlassNow): an 8 fl oz jar takes about 6.9 oz, which is 6.4 oz of wax plus 0.5 oz of fragrance oil at 8%.

How to measure a container
- Fill the empty container with water up to where the wax should stop, usually about ½ in below the rim.
- Pour the water into a measuring cup: that’s the capacity in fl oz.
- Dry it completely before pouring wax.
For the most exact figure, weigh the empty container, fill it with melted wax, let it set and weigh it again (GlassNow).
Questions
How much wax do I need for an 8 oz candle?
About 6.9 oz by weight for an 8 fl oz jar: 6.4 oz of wax and 0.5 oz of fragrance oil at 8%. For 12 candles, melt 4.8 lb of wax.
Why does an 8 oz jar hold less than 8 oz of wax?
The jar’s 8 oz is fluid ounces, a volume; wax is sold and weighed in ounces of weight. Wax is lighter than water, so a fluid ounce of space holds about 0.86 oz of wax.
How much fragrance oil per pound of wax?
1 oz at 6%, 1.3 oz at 8% and 1.6 oz at 10%. Weigh it on a scale; don’t measure it by volume.
How many candles does a 10 lb bag of wax make?
About 25 candles in 8 fl oz jars at an 8% fragrance load, with 12.8 oz of fragrance oil for the whole bag.
Do I add the fragrance on top of the wax weight?
GlassNow’s example adds the fragrance on top of the wax. We keep the total at the container’s fill weight and split it, so the jar isn’t overfilled. The fragrance is the same percentage of the wax either way.
