Epoxy resin calculator: how much resin do I need?

A flood coat takes about 4 fl oz of mixed epoxy per square foot (ArtResin): a 24 × 36 in tabletop needs about 26.4 fl oz with 10% extra. For molds and river tables, length × width × depth ÷ 1.805 gives fl oz.

Coat: area × the maker’s coverage (4 fl oz per sq ft for ArtResin). Pour: length × width × depth in cubic inches ÷ 1.805 = fl oz. Then add about 10% and split by the mix ratio.

Epoxy per square foot by pour depth

For molds, river tables and anything held in by a dam or form, the resin fills a measured volume. One US gallon is 231 cubic inches, so 1 fl oz is 1.805 cubic inches.

A 72 × 12 in river channel poured 1½ in deep takes about 789.9 fl oz (6.2 gallons) with 10% extra.

How to measure a mold

  1. Fill the mold with water to where the resin should stop.
  2. Pour the water into a measuring cup. That’s the fl oz of mixed resin you need.
  3. Dry the mold completely before pouring: water and epoxy don’t mix.

Or switch the calculator to Pour and enter the inside length, width and depth.

Questions

How much epoxy do I need for a 24 × 36 table?

About 26.4 fl oz of mixed epoxy for one flood coat, with 10% extra: 13.2 fl oz resin and 13.2 fl oz hardener for a 1:1 product. A 32 fl oz kit covers it.

How much does a gallon of epoxy cover?

As a flood coat at ArtResin’s rate of 4 fl oz per sq ft, a gallon of mixed resin (128 fl oz) coats about 32 sq ft. Poured into a form to a true 1/8 in depth, a gallon fills about 12.8 sq ft.

Why are coat and pour figures so different?

A flood coat spreads and self-levels into a thin layer, and makers publish coverage from their own tests. A dammed pour fills a measured volume, so it uses the geometry: 1/8 in deep over 1 sq ft is 10 fl oz. If your brand gives a coverage figure, type it into the calculator.

Do I measure epoxy by volume or by weight?

Follow the label. Many art and coating resins mix 1:1 by volume; many deep-pour and laminating resins mix 2:1 or 3:1. A ratio by weight isn’t the same as a ratio by volume, because resin and hardener have different densities.

Why add 10% extra?

Some resin stays in the cup and on the stir stick, and a little runs over the edges. Mixing a second small batch mid-pour risks a visible line, so it’s easier to mix slightly more than you need.

How deep can I pour epoxy in one go?

It depends on the product: the label gives a maximum pour depth. Pouring deeper than that can overheat, crack or yellow the resin, so split deep pours into layers and wait between them as the label says.
